This week I had an interesting conversation with the boys (22) on our Greek holiday working retreat. They’ll go to a festival when they return, and they were pretty happy about the digital support.
The boys: You can like certain artists, and sort on likes in your schedule grid so that it shows only those. That really helps with your festival planning.
Me: Sounds good! Web or app?
The boys: App! The website is terrible. Everything moves all the time and the font is unreadable. [Note: they mostly use the web on their phones, which makes everything a lot worse.]
Me:
<sigh />The boys (smirking): They even have a button to stop the site from jumping around and use a more legible font.
We need a button (actually a <span>) to make a website slightly less irrelevant and bullshitty. And people still wonder why the web is losing.
Do all serious usability/interaction/user experience designers work in the app space nowadays? Is there nobody’s left to pull the emergency break on the irrelevant animation and font junk?
A while back Ethan asked what we want to happen after AI goes down. Building websites that make sense and actually serve the user instead of being irrelevant bullshit should definitely be on that list. (OK, this already happened before AI. But let’s blame AI because why not?)
