font-style is for making text italic. There are two ways of doing this.

This paragraph has font-style: normal. This is the default.

This paragraph has font-style: italic.

This paragraph has font-style: oblique.

The difference between italic and oblique is that the browser may create its own italic font if oblique is used, but must use the provided italic font if italic is used.

That means there are some subtle differences between the two; see the zoomed screenshot below for some examples (Chrome 23 Mac). Italic at the top, oblique at the bottom. I leave it to people who actually know something about typography to draw conclusions.
