Q1 Android WebView statistics

Recently Scientia Mobile sent me their Android WebView stats over the first quarter. I edited them slightly and put them online.

I haven’t studied them in detail yet — to be honest, I’m not yet sure what my questions should be. Also, they are more detailed than the ones from December I published earlier — for instance, we now also have Android WebKit data in addition to Chromium data.

Interesting tidbits from March:

• 14% of Android users still use an Android WebKit-based WebView, and not a Chromium-based one. In general this WebView is the same as the default browser on their device.
• Samsung has a market share of 55%.
• No other device vendor has a market share higher than 7%.
• The vast majority uses one of the latest Chromium versions; with 48 being the largest with 55%. Let's say 75% latest Chromium versions overall; only 25% Android WebKit and custom Chromia.
• Nokia Android devices (they’re here!) use the most custom WebViews: only 11% uses something that can be described as a recent Chromium build.
